The Problem Of Cheating And Plagiarism - 819 Words

Students cheat. In a study done by Rutgers University, out of 71,300 undergraduate students, 17% admit to cheating on tests and 40% admit to cheating on written assignments. It doesn’t stop there, as ICAI Director Teresa Fishman claims, â€Å"We have reason to believe that students who cheat might also lie about cheating†. The problem lies when educators are only addressing which students are cheating over what caused them to cheat in the first place. Although the issue of cheating and plagiarism is not clearly black or white, I believe there are moments created within school systems where those actions seem like the clearest way out. Many of the older generation who probably forgot about their days in school are repulsed to believe students have the moral instability and lack of remorse when it comes to cheating, even at major institutions. Students typically start cheating when they enter high school, at this age however, their moral reasoning is not fully developed. Cheating to students at this stage in life equates to a blatant white lie. When these students enter college, although they’re morally more responsible, are too desensitized from starting at a young age. Cheating is a route followed by many young minds because of how easy it is to cheat. There are many forms of cheating that range from using your smart phone to laminating the inside of a water bottle.
